JOHN THOMAS BROWN, JR. of Moreland Hills, Ohio passed away at
Lakeside, Ohio on October 7, 2018. He was born on March 9, 1942 in Cleveland.
John was the son of Jane Nightingale Brown Wise and John Thomas Brown, Sr.,
and the brother of Harold Hayes Brown, now deceased.
John was graduated from Orange High School in 1960 and from Kent State University
with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1966. In 1970, John opened his own firm, Brown Architects,
and for five decades he designed residential homes and remodeling projects in Northeast Ohio.
During his career, he served on the architectural review boards for the cities of Gates Mills,
Pepper Pike, Hunting Valley and Lakeside. In 1981, he was awarded the Society of American
Registered Architects' Blue Ribbon Award of Merit for housing and in 1984 he was the selected
architect for the Cleveland Home and Flower Show. The Cleveland Restoration Society
and American Institute of Architects Cleveland recognized him with the Award of Merit for
Stewardship in 2013. In addition, he was an Assistant Professor of Architectural and Construction
Technology at Cuyahoga Community College for 28 years.
John loved to be on the water and spent much of his time during the summer boating around
the Marblehead peninsula and Lake Erie Islands, which he affectionately referred to as the "holy land."
In addition, he was an avid paddle tennis player, adventurous world traveler and frequent attendee
at his grandchildren's sporting and music events. An engaging and animated storyteller,
John loved to connect with friends and family, whether it was grabbing a drink with his paddle buddies
or hosting large family dinners. John, or Granddaddy as his grandchildren called him, was also devoted
to his two Scotties, Troone and Oban.
John is survived by his beloved wife Deborah. Also, by his son Peter Brown,wife Stefanie,
and their children Alex, Matt and Maggie; daughter Betsy Tinsley, husband Jeff and their
children Will and Ben. John is also survived by his step-children, Alec O'Neill and wife Allison;
Sara Sullivan, husband Brian, and their children Anna and Bess; Jessie Arose, husband Edward
and their children Lillian and Sebastian; and Laura Bower, husband Dennis,
and their children Hugh and Maeve. John is also survived by his brothers, Bill Brown and Joe Brown.
Private services will be held. The family will receive friends at the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club
in Gates Mills on Tuesday, October 16th from 4-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, Ohio & Lake Erie Chapter, 2002 West 41st Street,
Cleveland, OH 44113.
